Notes and Events:

A Buddhist meditation center and monastery has been established for practice and study of teachings of the Buddha. Learn how to incorporate Dhamma into ones day-to-day life while cultivating Sila (morality), Samadhi (concentration) and Panna (wisdom).

Bodhiwanaya is Located in the central hills of Sri Lanka, the city of Kandy is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the country. Once recognized as an ancient capital, the city is the cultural capital of the Island because the most sacred Buddhist temple “The Dalada Maligawa (the temple of the tooth)” is there.

Kandy has a history in meditation. Handed down from Venerable Minhindu, the traditions and knowledge of meditation are sustained by the efforts of Venerable Aritta and other local Buddhist monks. Asgiri Maha Viharaya which was located at Udawatta Kale hill area near Kandy city was the primary reason for the survival of these great traditions. At the same time, there were several forest meditation sanctuaries including historical Rama Viharaya.

Yet the history of having forest meditation sanctuaries at Udawatta Kale runs as far as the Anuradhapura era. Rock caves for human dwelling and archives of stone tablets confirm the long history of Udawatta Kale. Historically these sanctuaries were located near the east side of the hill near the Mahavali river valley.  Though these sanctuaries faded away, historical Gangaramaya Temple has roots that connect these historical statuaries to the present.

During the colonial times control was taken by the government who divided the land into two main sections; the upper land was governed as a natural reserve and the lower land were used for agricultural purposes, which later came to know as Thalwatta plantation. Recently, one section of this plantation located near Gangarama was bought by Mr. Weerasekara for private use. Later he decided to build a meditation center then donate it to a board of trustees after his death.

The responsibility of beginning and maintaining the meditation center was given to his friend and the chief meditation instructor at the Nilamba meditation center, Mr. Godwin Samararattna. For the next 15 years this place has been accommodating many local and international visitors.

With the 2600th anniversary of Buddha’s enlightenment Venerable Missaka was named as the center’s new chief meditation instructor.  There have been several renovations and new changes including naming the meditation center, “Bodhi Vanaya Sadaham Senasuna.”

This historically significant place will play an imperative role in serving all sentient beings by making the long lasting meditation traditions alive again.
