We offer you an opportunity to read and learn about Buddhism in the Theravada tradition. Theravada (Pali: Thera=elders, vada=doctrine) or the "doctrine of the elders" represents the school of Buddhism that draws spiritual inspiration from the Pali Canon (or "Tripitaka") generally accepted by scholars as the oldest record of Buddha's teachings.
Imparting knowledge with a view toward developing and improving another's knowledge is Dhammadana in Buddhist terminology. The Buddha teaches us to appreciate the value of wisdom since it is the most valuable asset for a living being: hence, the need for us to develop our minds, as well as to help others to develop their knowledge.
There are two ways to achieve this end. One is by reading extensively on Buddha Dhamma. The other is by questioning that may invariably lead to discussion. It shall be our endeavour to provide satisfactory answers to such queries.

- On a daily basis, we perform the offering of water tormas and Tara practice in the morning and an offering to the glorious Four-Armed Mahakala and Dudsolma in the evening.
- On Wednesdays, we perform Chöd offerings.
- On the 15th of every Tibetan lunar month, we perform Tara puja.
- On the 8th of every Tibetan lunar month, we perform the Medicine Buddha puja.
- On the 10th of every lunar month, we perform a feast offering to Vajrakilaya.
- On the 25th of every Tibetan lunar month, we also perform the long Vajravarahi Sadhana and Milarepa Guru Yoga with a feast offering.

New York Zendo Shobo-ji officially opened its doors on September 15, 1968. It was one of the first Rinzai Zen practice centers to be established in the United States, and remains one of the few authentic Rinzai Zen centers anywhere.
Located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York Zendo offers city dwellers the opportunity to experience authentic Zen practice in the midst of their daily lives. With a full weekly schedule of zazen and chanting, regular all-day sittings and other activities, the temple provides ample opportunities for the Sangha to practice, work, and celebrate together.

Newark Center for Meditative Culture (NCMC) is a diverse urban meditation community serving the Greater Newark Area in New Jersey. From 2012 through 2016 we served as an informal community initiative until we then formed a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 2017. Most of our programs have been held at art galleries and in nature at parks. Our programs are based on secular and spiritual teachings from Buddhist and other wisdom traditions, within the context of the socially engaged, multi-cultural and diverse population of the Greater Newark Area. Our programs comprise of meditation classes, daylong retreats, sitting groups, and workshops. We engage too through Compassionate Activism. We are active in supporting local community events and making presentations in order to educate the community about meditation. NCMC is a volunteer-run organization with a strong commitment to openness and inclusion. We do this in two ways:
Diversity/Expansiveness: Our intention is to offer both general and specific programs for specific groups of people and issues. Thus far we have had focused-programs and retreats related to People of Color (PoC), women, and children. The PoC retreats especially are intended to provide an affinity group for individuals who daily confront the effects of oppression and racism, and who therefore may initially choose to avoid mixed programs.
Inclusiveness: All of our programs are offered as donation-based no-fee to the participant. Instead, we invite all participants to make voluntary gifts to the level of their ability, sometimes with suggested donation amounts. NCMC disperses the donations equitably between teachers and venue providers. We base this system on the practice of dana or generosity, which is inherent to many spiritual traditions. See Giving.
Our Mission
To form a meditation community based on the secular, universal principles and practices of Buddhist-based psychology/philosophy, applied through both traditional and contemporary means, along with ancestral, yogic, Taoist, Sufi, and other wisdom teachings and disciplines. NCMC is intended to be a safe place where like-minded people can gather in order to practice the fundamental meditation methods of tranquility, insight, and loving-kindness (metta), and to become engaged together in conscientious, compassionate, and contemplative activities as a group and in the local community.

To be an inclusive community of practice, study, and social engagement that provides a refuge for all people who seek meditation and spiritual development and a purposeful, conscientious lifestyle.

To develop a center with a dedicated meditation community committed to practicing together and supporting each other and to maintain the culture of this center so that all can feel welcome. We intend for it to take shape both through leader guidance and organic means according to the wants, needs, and conditions of the community. Our founding members are committed to furthering our spiritual growth and leadership capacities through ongoing practice and education in order for the organization to develop fluidly and become self-regulating. By engaging teachers and advisors with deep knowledge and practice in Buddhist philosophy and meditation, other wisdom disciplines, and community immersion, we can ensure that we maintain integrity.

An article on this website explains how the meaning of the Lotus Sutra and the rituals of the Nichiren tradition can be reset for a secular worldview. The site also contains sample secular prayers to replace traditional versions found in the prayer books of multiple denominations. The purpose is to provide those ready to transition into a secular practice with a way to either integrate with the school they are currently associated with or continue independently.
Reading the article may be difficult for some. It is formatted for an academic journal and addresses issues related to reinterpreting long-standing Mahayana doctrine. The site administer is available for questions, but there are no priests or lay leaders. No donations, too.
