Smiling Buddha Zen Center (SBZC), Nikoyaka Butsu-in, is located in the greater Denver Metro area, in beautiful Colorado. The Zen Center is affiliated with the Order of Clear Mind Zen (the head of the order is Daiho Roshi), in the lineage of Soyu Matsuoka Roshi – who was a Gondaikyshi (Bishop) of Soto Zen and the resident teacher at Sokoji Zen temple in San Francisco, responsible for Shunryu Suzuki Roshi being invited to the US. Matsuoka Roshi also founded the Zen Buddhist Temple of Chicago and, in 1971, the Long Beach Zen Buddhist Temple. The honorary Abbot and guiding teacher of SBZC is Shoji Sorensen Roshi, Abbot of Gyōa-ji Zen temple, Hanashobu-an. (That’s three Roshis in one paragraph, which feels excessive). Formal practice is primarily in Soto Zen style.

The resident teacher at SBZC is John Kijo Sensei, who originally ordained in 1991 with the White Plum/Maezumi Roshi Zen lineage and in the Matsuoka lineage in 2017. The assistant temple priest  at SZBC is Rev. Maria Shinzai.

Notes and Events:

Songtsen Gampo Buddhist Center aims to create a more peaceful, loving, and kind world through providing opportunities for people of all faiths to access the Buddha's teachings. It is essential to understand one’s own mind in order to have peace within and without. This begins with simple things like meditation and studying the teachings on the nature of reality.  We offer instruction in meditation and philosophy, Lama visits, workshops, retreats, Buddhist practice, and programs for all ages.  We are passionate about providing the opportunity for all—Buddhist and non-Buddhist alike—to discover the importance of wisdom and compassion in their own lives.

We are the most active Buddhist group in the Greater Cleveland area, and the only one offering regular programs for children and families. In addition, our resident teacher, Buddhist nun Ani Palmo Rybicki, is one of the most highly trained Buddhist teachers in the country, having completed over seven years in retreat and studied Buddhism for more than 30 years. She is careful to present authentic teachings and does so with clarity and humour. The Dalai Lama often says, “My religion is kindness,” and our deepest wish is to bring this kindness into the world and to help others do the same.

Notes and Events:

While we are ostensibly a Buddhist Sangha, we are more interested in exploring the Dharma, and, most importantly, practicing meditation, primarily according to the teachings of the Buddha, than we are in identifying ourselves as Buddhists, or affiliating with any Buddhist institution. Our format is simple: We gather once a week (Sunday, 5:00 PM, in Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church, at 1300 Main St. Stevens Point) for a half-hour of silent meditation, followed, usually, by a reading someone has brought in, or some impromptu discussion. We find that being part of a Sangha helps keep our practice fresh and vital.

If you are interested in dipping your toes in, we are the most unintimidating folks you will ever come across. Please feel welcome to join us. (If you are coming for the first time, it would be helpful for you to arrive a little early, so that we can get you oriented.)

Any questions, call Steve Bartelt at 715  366-2444, email: sbartelt@uniontel.net.

with gassho,
Steve
