We are an affiliate center of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra (KTD), the North American seat of His Holiness the Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje. Albany KTC was established in 1979 by His Holiness the XVI Karmapa, head of the Karma Kagyu Lineage, and is under the spiritual guidance of Ven. Bardor Tulku Rinpoche and Ven. In addition, we study Tibetan Buddhism together in a group setting by reading texts by teachers of the Karma Kagyu lineage. ZEN
Zen Wisdom is thought to be the most refined spiritual possession of Asia, with its origin in India, its development in China, and its practical application in Japan. Wherever there is poetic action, a religious aspiration, a heroic thought, there is Zen. Zen is direct- goes straight to the point- requires no mediator. It is the greatest gift the Orient can make to the Occident.

ZAZEN: Formal Zen meditation.
Meditation has been said to occupy in Buddhism the place of prayer in other religious. In a sense this is true- except that Zen meditation is not prayer, makes no assumptions at all about God, and has been practiced by adherents of many major religions.

Zen meditation is not a dreamy reverie. Nor does it seek to apply the mind to any formulated problems of philosophy, ethics, or theology. Rather, the object of meditation is to force the participant beyond the sphere where words can be used, into the realm of immediacy where Ultimate Truth can be realized.

To put it simply, Zen meditation is to be approached as an end in itself. Greater Wisdom is not its aim but is an incidental results. It is extremely practical and penetrates all phases of daily life.

Who can participate?
Anyone who desires to progress in mind, body, and spirit may benefit by attending the Zen center. Among attendants have been practitioners of Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, and secular ethical philosophies, as well as other Buddhists. The only requirements are a sincere purpose and a clean body.

Application to life.
The late Reverend Dr. Soyu Matsuoka-roshi said: "Many people have inquired about the life that a Zen person should lead. As you grow in Zen, you will find that you no longer have to think about how to act, or how to live, because the life of Zen will have matured in you, and your actions will be in complete harmony with your inner spirit."

Where to Begin?

1. Study.

2. Reflection.

3. Meditation.

4. Finding spiritual friends.

Awakened Life is a re-imagining of the Zen koan tradition that is rooted in its original values: life as a process of awakening; meditation, inquiry, imagination, and relationship as ways to discover and deepen that awakening; and creativity and caring for our world as the natural expression of awakening. We believe that buddha nature is everywhere, and so we value the art and the metaphors, the myths and the landscapes of this time and place. Awakened Life is a constantly evolving field of practice, shaped by the experiences of people right here and now. Enlightenment as a conspiracy of friends.
The Awakened Life programs and community are in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where founding teacher Joan Sutherland lives. Awakened Life forms the center of The Open Source, a network of practice communities and individuals in the western United States committed to co-creation, life in this world, and awakening together.

Notes and Events:

Zen Meditation instruction offered at Awakened Meditation Centre by Zen Master Hwasun Yangil is intended for both beginners and advanced students alike.

Participants are offered a rare opportunity to enrich their inner life and practice under the guidance of an experienced Zen Master.

Instruction is provided in sitting meditation posture, breathing techniques, walking meditation, and Ko-an meditation, to concentrate and awaken the mind.

According to Zen tradition, at a gathering of his disciples Shakyamuni Buddha probed the understanding of his followers about the ultimate goal of His teaching by holding a flower aloft before the assembly. Among the thousand assembled there, only Mahakasyapa is said to have understood the gesture and acknowledged it with a smile. Thereupon, the Enlightened One acknowledged the transmission of the right Dharma eye, the blissful mind of Nirvana and the ultimate reality to the Venerable Mahakasyapa.

The transmission is outside of the scriptures. It aims at the direct pointing at the mind for the perception of self-nature and attainment of enlightenment.

The Zen teaching traces its origin from this transmission. It remains a living tradition, passed on from master to disciple.

From the great traditions of Asia, Zen has found a new home in the hearts of many in North America and Europe.

Zen opens a whole world of possibilities for improving and appreciating one\\\'s day-to-day life through mindfulness and awareness of the moment.
