Spiritual Director: Yao Xiang Shakya  (Phone: 8473322577)
Notes and Events:

We are a new order rooted in the ancient teachings of Zen. We are inclusive, contemplative and are what we like to call a backyard practice.

After many years of spiritual practice we discovered an inward inclination to live a more contemplative life. Despite living in an urban setting, we live the life of quiet reflection without rule or imposed structure. As we practice we find silence, meditation, solitude, study and work to be the Way to finding and being our true Self.

We maintain a small zendo, look after two dogs and are friendly to our neighbors.

We welcome those who might be inclined to live a contemplative life right in the middle of ordinary circumstances. We offer little in the way of imposed structure or rule but point the way to find the Dharma through essays, good words, books, art, lay and priest ordination and contemplative practices. If you feel drawn to a contemplative life right where you are and might find some connection to others beneficial, please contact us by e-mail.

There are no fees, no membership cards, and no bylaws.

We offer the Dharma.

Yao Xiang Shakya

Newly forming Adhivara House in Southwest Missouri is hoping to establish itself as a retirement hermitage for a small number of male contemplatives/lay monastics who choose to still live and/or work part-time in the secular world. There is no formal program or structure at Adhivara but residents share in the work of landscaping, cooking, house, yard and office work. The Hermitage is meant to be a refuge for serious contemplatives seeking to live cooperatively and support each other in their chosen practice. While primarily Theravada Buddhist and Insight in orientation, contemplatives from all inclusive faith traditions are encouraged to inquire.

We are an affiliate center of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra (KTD), the North American seat of His Holiness the Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje. Albany KTC was established in 1979 by His Holiness the XVI Karmapa, head of the Karma Kagyu Lineage, and is under the spiritual guidance of Ven. Bardor Tulku Rinpoche and Ven. Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, the resident lamas at KTD.

The Albany KTC community engages in several meditation practices that come out of the tradition of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. In addition, we study Tibetan Buddhism together in a group setting by reading texts by teachers of the Karma Kagyu lineage. We also participate in a variety of community service activities, and provide Tibetan language instruction. Finally, we have the good fortune to receive teachings from a host of Karma Kagyu Lineage Buddhist teachers from around the world on a regular basis.
