Notes and Events:

We offer you an opportunity to read and learn about Buddhism in the Theravada tradition. Theravada (Pali: Thera=elders, vada=doctrine) or the "doctrine of the elders" represents the school of Buddhism that draws spiritual inspiration from the Pali Canon (or "Tripitaka") generally accepted by scholars as the oldest record of Buddha's teachings.

Imparting knowledge with a view toward developing and improving another's knowledge is Dhammadana in Buddhist terminology. The Buddha teaches us to appreciate the value of wisdom since it is the most valuable asset for a living being: hence, the need for us to develop our minds, as well as to help others to develop their knowledge.

There are two ways to achieve this end. One is by reading extensively on Buddha Dhamma. The other is by questioning that may invariably lead to discussion. It shall be our   endeavour to provide satisfactory answers to such queries.

Teacher: Phra Ofer Adi
Notes and Events:

Ein Dor Buddhist Vipassana Meditation Center headed by the monk and teacher Ofer Adi, was established to promote Dharma in Israel. The center is situated at kibbutz Ein Dor at the foot of Mt. Tavor and provides training for people who are interested in learning about and practicing vipassana meditation. The center is open to new and experienced practitioners all year round.

The Newman Society was founded to promote Dharma in Israel by means of the establishment and maintenance of a Buddhist Center for the practice and teaching of vipassana meditation, under the guidance of the venerable Ajarn Tong Sirimangalo (one of the best known teachers in Thailand) for as many practitioners as possible. Ajarn Ofer Adi,an Israeli monk and disciple of the venerable Ajarn Tong, is resident head monk and teacher at the Ein Dor center, devoting his time to guiding practitioners and teaching Buddhism. The society’s future aims include providing facilities and accommodation for monks and teachers from other Buddhist traditions. The Society operates in the same manner as the teaching of the practice at the center – on the basis of generosity and donation not for profit or benefit.

Phra Ofer Adi is a monk who been practicing vipassana meditation for 16 years at Wat Lampang Wat Chom Tong in Thailand under the instruction of Ven. Ajarn Tong Sirimangalo. Phra Ofer taught for several years in Israel before becoming a monk in Thailand 6 years ago followed by several years as monk and teacher at a Buddhist temple near Frankfurt Germany. He is currently head monk at the Ein Dor center teaching in Israel as well as various places in the world.

Nilambe Meditation Centre

Tradition: Theravada
Website: http://www.nilambe.org/
Notes and Events:

Contacting Nilambe in the new electronic ways is not always easy - we suggest that you come here and meet us! However, do try Upul on 0777-804 555;  Nalaka on 0777-811 653; or Pitigala on 0776-756 598. You may also want to try email:  info@nilambe.org (sometimes checked).

Getting there and away: The centre is easily reached by the Galaha/Deltota bus #633 from Kandy. It passes Nilambe Office Junction (about 17km). From there it is a steep walk through tea plantations to reach the centre. Alternatively, taxis or autorickshaws are available from Kandy. Advice can also be sought from the Buddhist Publication Society in Kandy. Autorickshaws are often available from the bottom of the office junction, at Nilambe, but the gate half way up the tea estate road is locked most of the time.

General info: Meditators stay from one night to several years, and the centre can help long term meditators with visa extensions. Accommodation at the centre is in single or shared rooms. The centre has no electricity supply, and conditions are adequate but basic. Although this is a lay centre, often there are members of the Sangha undertaking personal retreats at Nilambe. The centre charges 400 Sri Lankan rupees per day (about GBP 2.15 sterling, USD 3.90 at June 2004 rates) to foreigners to cover accommodation and food. Sri Lankans may offer donations instead. The majority of resident meditators are westerners, but many Sri Lankans also use the centre (particularly around Poya days). Teaching is also available in English and Sinhala by the resident teacher, Upul. There is a good library of books and tapes in English and Sinhala. Make sure that you bring a flashlight (no electricity), an umbrella and warm clothes (cold at night). The centre provides bedsheets and pillows et cetera.

Our vision is to promote the practice and realization of being fully awake to the truth of our experience.

We recognise that this radical awareness, while inherent and completely natural, demands a profound and disciplined inquiry to bring to fruition.

Sustaining this inquiry, encouraging suitable meditation practices and supporting the growth of a community of practitioners is the work of Original Nature.

Becoming fully present to our experience naturally evokes a response of reverence, compassion and joy. These qualities are the heart of our teaching and practice.

Original Nature Meditation Centre is founded on the ethical principles of the Buddha-dharma. Our work is dedicated to nurturing wisdom and peace in ourselves and others, and for the benefit of all beings.

We acknowledge with gratitude the lineage of our past and present teachers and we belong primarily to the Insight/Vipassana strand of the Buddhist tradition.

Founded in Ottawa in 2007 by Sri Lankan Monk Most Venerable Kekanadure Hemalankara Nayaka Thero to meet the religious and cultural needs of the growing Buddhist population in our nation’s capital, the monastery relocated to Orléans in July, 2014. It is a registered charitable organization (Ottawa Theravada Buddhist and Cultural Center Inc., registration number 847682291 RR0001) that is funded by voluntary donations. Buddhist community life revolves around a local monastery acting as a service hub to the surrounding population. Ottawa Theravada Buddhist Vihara and Cultural Center (Ottawa Buddhist Monastery) aims to replicate this tradition by offering many events and activities free-of-charge to its members and the general public, Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.
