Everyone who has an interest in Tibetan Buddhism, who likes to know something about meditation or who is simply curious about our center is more then welcome to drop in. Maitreya Amsterdam mainly focuses on people who know little or nothing about Buddhism, but we also provide more extensive study programs.

Venerable Kaye Miner is a Buddhist nun and the resident teacher. She teaches during weekends and in the evenings of weekdays on Buddhist philosophy within the FPMT study programs Discovering Buddhism and the Basic Program. One evening per week Venerable Kaye guides a meditation session. All teachings and the Monday night meditations are given in easy to understand English.

Often a learned Tibetan teacher (a geshe) comes to give teachings and for beginners there is the course Buddhism in a Nutshell or Meditation 1.0.

Maitreya Amsterdam regularly organises short guided retreats, pujas (Buddhist offering ceremonies) and recitations.

Also other Tibetan lamas and western teachers regularly teach or guide meditations for beginning as well as advanced students.

Besides the Buddhist program, other courses such as thangka painting and Tibetan language are organised regularly.

Our center in Emst with overnight accommodation focusses more on extensive weekend study programs and longer retreats.

    Notes and Events:

The Malaysian Buddhist Meditation Centre (MBMC) is a non-profit institution dedicated to the teaching of Vipassana meditation – the Buddha’s cure for all human mental maladies, the Way to the End of All Ills.

Vipassana is a Pali word often translated as Insight. Hence, Vipassana meditation is Insight or Wisdom meditation. In these times of hectic activities, pressure and competition; of greed and delusion; of envy, hatred and conflicts, Vipassana should be very much welcomed as a soothing balm to cool our burning hearts and minds. Through Vipassana, we can develop a mind that is always serene, fearless and unshakeable. More importantly, we can gain profound Insight or Wisdom that can liberate us from all suffering, the Wisdom of Non-Attachment, Non-Clinging.

MBMC was founded by the late Venerable Phra Khru Dhammabarnchanvud (Luang Por) on 11 February 1969 and the Centre was officially opened by him on 3 October 1982. It is located at 355 Jalan Masjid Negeri (formerly known as Green Lane), 11600 Penang, Malaysia. It is adjacent to the Convent Green Lane Secondary School. The Centre is a three-storey building with spacious meditation halls and a large compound. The ladies’ quarters are sited in separate buildings (called ‘kutis’) nearby.

    Notes and Events:

Samatha means calm. Samatha meditation is an effective but gentle way of training the mind to develop inner strength and freedom from turmoil, leading on to clarity and understanding. This path from calm to insight was followed by the Buddha himself, and is a central tradition of Buddhist meditation. There are many kinds of Samatha meditation techniques: this one is based on attention to the breath, a subject which is said to be suitable for all types of people.

By regular daily practice the chattering, unruly mind gradually becomes calmer and develops clarity. The way our mind works becomes less confusing to us and we begin to understand the habits of mind that hold us back from happiness and freedom. We become kinder to ourselves and those around us. Meditation is a practical matter: increased awareness brings an ability to make the most of ourselves in our daily lives.

Classes for beginners are held at 2pm and 8pm on Mondays and at 8pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

Weekday evening classes begin at 7.50 for an 8 pm start. Feel free to join a class at any time.

Classes run throughout the year during school term times and you may join a class at any time during the term. A particular teacher takes the class on a particular day of the week, and it is recommended to try to keep to the same class. Please arrive in good time.
