The Compassionate Service Society is a non-profit 501(c)3 Organization based in Southern California, USA. CSS was founded by Master CE Hang Truong in 2002.

Born in Vietnam, Venerable Hang Truong grew up during the war, and was educated in United States,. He was ordained under Chinese tradition and educated in the Dharma under the direct tutelage of Master Hsuan Hua, the founder of the City of Ten Thousand Buddha Chinese Zen lineage. Master Hang Truong has worked and served multiethnic communities across Asia, America and Europe.

The Master embodies, teaches, and lives by multicultural, multi-disciplined, global centric values. He is very well known for his holistic, integral approach to modernize and integrate Buddhism into the fast changing world.

Though founded on Buddhist principles, CSS takes an ecumenical and all-inclusive approach that transcends religious and cultural boundaries. By integrating the ancient teachings of Buddhism with the best of 21st century thought, practices, philosophies, and knowledge, CSS seeks to bring unity and healing to the body, mind and spirit.

CSS’ Services Group consists of volunteers who dedicate their time, energy and care towards giving service to the community. CSS volunteers have taught Integral Tai Chi and Yoga classes, sponsored humanitarian relief and charity projects, led family summer camp, and organized many meditation and spiritual retreats.

The Guhyasamaja Center for Tibetan Buddhist meditation is a community of spiritual friends in the Washington DC area dedicated to the practice of Mahayana Buddhism. Our resident teacher, Gyumed Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jampa (Geshe Thinley Topgyal), is a retired abbot of Gyumed Tantric College. We follow the Gelugpa tradition, the same lineage as His Holiness The Dalai Lama. Visiting teachers who have graced the Center in the past include Ven. Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Ven. Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche, and Yangsi Rinpoche.

Our Spiritual Director, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, founded the center in 1994 as part of the worldwide Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition. FPMT is an international family of city and retreat centers, monasteries, publishing houses, hospices, and healing centers established by Lama Yeshe.

Geshe Jampel Thardo is a distinguished Lharampa Geshe (the highest level of learning in Buddhism) from Drepung Loseling Monastery.  Geshe-la, originally from Lhasa, Tibet, traveled to the United States in 1972 at the request of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to teach Buddhism.  He has been the resident Lama of the Jefferson Tibetan Society since 1983.  He has taught numerous Americans the precious Buddhist teachings of compassion, love and wisdom. He has also taught in New York, New Jersey, California and Hawaii among other locations.

Geshe-la exemplifies the ideal H.H. Dalai Lama emphasizes of living a life as a simple Buddhist monk.  His dedication to this ideal and profound pursuit of daily spiritual practice is a great inspiration to his students.  Geshe-la teaches each Wednesday evening, 7:30 to 9:00 pm a the Jefferson Tibetan Society Temple in Charlottesville.

The Mahayana Sutra and Tantra Center (MSTC) was established in 1975 by the late Hlaramapa Geshe, Khensur Lobsang Tharchin Rinpoche. It was incorporated as a non-profit religious organization dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of Buddhist knowledge (according to the Gelukpa Tibetan Buddhist tradition) in 1980.

MSTC, DC is affiliated with MSTC of Howell, New Jersey. The center’s teaching program includes classes on Buddhist philosophy, mental training (Lojong), Lam Rim, debate, logic, Abhidharma, Madyamaka philosophy, and meditation practices from both Sutra and Tantra traditions. Tibetan language instruction is also available. Weekend retreats are sometimes held.

All of our classes are offered free of charge. The Washington DC center participates in the audio-taping and transcribing of teachings for eventual publication by the Mahayana Sutra and Tantra Press. It also helps in the sponsorship of scholars and orphaned monks of Sermey Monastic University in India.
